i just made the following post on my blog www.chycho.com/ ... someone please tell me that i'm over reacting :(

I’ve been considering the implications of the recent lose of four key patents by Monsanto, and I have only been able to come up with one unequivocal conclusion: This is a disaster.
What if Monsanto was protecting us from their creation? What if they know something that we don’t?
Farmers will now be able to save seeds in surplus and sell them to their neighbors or anyone else in the world thanks to the Internet. They will be able to do this at a fraction of the cost of Monsanto, creating a huge demand for these Genetically Modified Organisms. This means that Genetically Engineered Crops will now be grown around the world decades earlier then what was predicted by its creators.
The damage done to the environment from these organisms can no longer be contained, on the contrary it will be accelerated beyond our worst scientific predictions. If the disappearance of the bees, dubbed "Colony Collapse Disorder", is any indication, we are about to change the whole ecosystem.
There is no way to prevent farmers from selling contaminated seeds, and it is very unlikely that Monsanto will open their data basis and release any results from their own scientific experiments that refute the safety of Genetically Modified Foods.
Unfortunately, it appears that we just jumped from the frying pan into a blazing inferno.

Re: The Implications of Monsanto’s Patent Losses
Thu, August 9, 2007 - 11:15 AMYou have brought up what May be a very valid point - -
I believe that Monsanto is Well aware of the implications that their products have ! I seem to recall (some 15 years ago or so) there being a Major outcry concerning genetically engineered products and SEEDS specifically. The seeds were designed to produce products that were infertile... meaning that (and this was the reason for the outcry) the farmers that bought these seeds - would have to Continue to buy them. They would not be able to harvest seeds to carry over from one year to the next from the crops they produced.
The reason that was given by the companies, that were named at the time (now lost in my memory) was to retain the purity of their product. They did not want the crops to 'mutate' - Another reason to be concerned ! They were attempting to sue local farmers whose lands were adjacent to these large bio crops - claiming that the proxemity risked the mutation of THE COMPANY'S crops. The companies also were attempting to claim that the organic farmers in these area were putting their product at risk by Refusing to use the company recommended pesticides on the organic farms.
There seems (to me) to be a Real coralation between the genitically engineered crop - the pesticides used to ''protect" them - and the death of honey bee colonies, habitat damage, and health issues that are just now beginning to show up....
SUPPORT local organic farmers ! Encourage bio-diversity ! Plant Heritage or Heirloom seeds and encourage the support of the farmers that grow / raise Heritage (heirloom) plants and animals !

Indeed. This is of particular interest in the middle east, where monsanto, cargill and others have slipped in changes to those countries patent laws that forbid poor farmers from saving seeds, at least the crops that do produce viable seed, forcing them to buy seed from these conglomerates. it's just another form of slavery.

Re: The Implications of Monsanto’s Patent Losses
Wed, November 21, 2007 - 11:24 AMYou know think people are either redundant or lazy. It takes some doing to revitalize soil, but if a farmer practices correct growing protocol, by letting soil go fallow, then rebuilding it, they can produce seeds for the next year. The genetic mutations may exist, but seeds are always available through farmer's communities. This nightmare of Monsanto is actually going to go away, it is autogenic in nature. Farmers have always found ways to change or adapt, and there are so many more types of plants available to grow these days, many more than even 1000 years ago.
Thank God Monsanto is going under.
